Sierra y Meta presentan el Personal Agent Protocol: así hablarán los agentes de IA de tus clientes con tu empresaSierra and Meta unveil the Personal Agent Protocol: how your customers' AI agents will talk to your business

2026-10-12

Sierra and Meta introduced the Personal Agent Protocol (PAP), an open standard that defines how personal AI agents identify themselves to a business and what actions they are allowed to take. According to The Next Web, the announcement came on October 6, 2026, and version 0.1 of the specification is due later this month.

How it would work

  • Sessions are built on OAuth: the agent can start as a guest to check stock or returns policies.
  • Once the customer signs in, they choose read-only or write access.
  • The session carries across channels, so an earlier question and a later order change count as one visit.
  • The business chooses how agents connect: through its website, through APIs (the article cites MCP and OpenAPI) or through its own agent.

Who backs it

Besides Sierra and Meta, named partners include Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart. Payments are a future extension, and no European bank or retailer is yet among the participants. Stripe and Shopify also take part in Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, which points to a period of competing standards.

Why it matters for customer service

Until now, support channels were designed for people. If customers start delegating inquiries and requests to their own agents, companies will need to authenticate them, limit their permissions and keep a record of what they did. It is the same governance and traceability challenge already being discussed in banking and financial services.
