Rank Math PRO: copias del plugin de WordPress con puerta trasera circularon durante 11 horasRank Math PRO: backdoored WordPress plugin copies circulated for about 11 hours

2026-10-20

WordPress sites that installed or updated Rank Math PRO between 20:02 UTC on October 15 and 07:12 UTC on October 16, 2026 may be compromised. According to The Hacker News report of October 19, copies distributed in that window, version 3.0.123, contained a backdoor (CVE-2026-111862, rated 9.8 by Wordfence).

Why it is hard to clean

  • The malicious code can recreate its backdoor whenever someone visits the site, so deleting files may not be enough.
  • Attackers may have created administrator accounts, altered the .htaccess file, scheduled tasks and left SSH keys.
  • The fixed version, 3.0.124, does not remove what the malware already installed.

If the plugin was installed and activated within the window, treat it as compromised even if it was later updated. The free WordPress.org plugin is not named among the affected.

What to do

  • Restore a backup from before 20:02 UTC on October 15, scan the site and change all credentials (WordPress, database, FTP/SSH, API, hosting).
  • Without a clean backup: fully delete the rank-math-pro folder (deactivating is not enough), remove the suspicious wp_options entries and block connections to rank1cdn[.]com.
  • Look for unknown administrators, scheduled tasks and SSH keys, and install 3.0.124 last, downloaded only from rankmath.com. The company says it never emails download links.

Rank Math has not yet explained how the files reached its distribution system or how many customers received them.

Takeaways for support teams and SMEs

A compromised website quickly turns into calls, emails and messages from worried customers. With Servigo365, the TEKFENIX help desk, a team can open one ticket per incident, record who notified whom, keep a history and meet communication SLAs while IT cleans the site. And if customers show up at a branch with questions, Nexturno helps organize queues and turns so the counter is not overwhelmed. They are tools for orderly processes and data; neither includes artificial intelligence.
