Exchange Online bloquea EWS y algunas apps de correo fallan: así se reactiva de forma temporal hasta abril de 2027Exchange Online blocks EWS and some mail apps break: how to re-enable it temporarily until April 2027

2026-10-23

Microsoft explained on October 22, 2026 how to restore applications that stopped working in Exchange Online after the block of Exchange Web Services (EWS), BleepingComputer reported. The company announced in February that it would block EWS by default from October 1, 2026, with temporary access possible through an app allowlist until the final shutdown on April 1, 2027.

What is breaking

Affected users see messages saying the EWS protocol is unavailable or get repeated username and password prompts. Reported apps include desktop Outlook add-ins, older Outlook for Windows versions and Apple Mail and Calendar on macOS. In practice: help desk tickets with no obvious cause from the user's point of view.

How to re-enable it (temporary fix)

  • Microsoft 365 admin center: on the Baseline Security Mode page, clear "Block your entire organization from using EWS".
  • PowerShell: run Set-OrganizationConfig -EWSEnabled $true in Exchange Online PowerShell; the change should apply within about 4 hours.

Microsoft stresses that this re-enablement will stop working in April 2027. The lasting fix is to update apps to versions that do not use EWS (the vendor must ship them) and, for in-house software, to migrate to Microsoft Graph API, which Microsoft says has near-complete feature parity for most scenarios. The retirement only affects Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online; on-premises Exchange Server keeps EWS.

How to get organized

For an IT and support team, the concrete task is to inventory which tools and add-ins depend on EWS, group the related tickets, inform users and set migration dates before April 2027.

This is where Servigo365, the TEKFENIX help desk, helps: by logging every incident as a ticket with category, history and SLA, it is easy to see that several reports share one cause, prioritize them and follow up until closed. With incidents in order, the team knows what to migrate first.
